This gelateria is probably placed in one of the most sought after and popular areas in town. Neighbours with the electric cinema it cannot help but attract a cool crowd of hungry, hippy, dessert devourers. I instantly warmed to the design of calming pastel colours and I loved the philosophy of strictly using only fresh and natural ingredients.
The ice cream was displayed in my favourite smart stainless steal cases and there was a reasonable selection to choose from of which many of these were, to my delight, seasonal. We ended up doing our typical taster session where the staff normally are quite patient although, on this occasion after each of us holding at least five little plastic spoons I think they may have hated us. The situation worsened considerably more when our friend Sophie turned up by surprise understandably wanting a few more free treats. The atmosphere turned a little hostile after that and I could not blame them. (below)
I opted for the pistachio as it was a beautiful pastel greeny brown which was not unlike my homemade concoction. Grace and Helen shared between them raspberry sorbet and chocolate ice cream and they could not say a bad word about either. Of course I double checked this and like them I could not complain. Nevertheless, I continue to rate Gelupo's chocolate ice cream as being one of the best in the city as the quality of the chocolate is in a class of it's own.
Perhaps a little more than Gelupo at £4.50 for two scoops but for the quality we did not mind. Situated bang in the middle of Portobello you probably end up paying a little more for the location but we agreed that it ends up being a great spot to people watch at the bar whilst licking a delicious dollop.
